**Let me start out by warning the grandmothers that read this post......I can barely type it without crying so you may not make it through reading it. You have been warned!**
Scooter has mentioned several times this year that he wanted to buy Tim and I gifts. Both of us tried to convince him that we didn't need anything and to save his money for something he might want. After a few of these conversations, nothing else was mentioned about it and we assumed he had forgotten the whole idea.
Tim and I never buy each other gifts since we really truly don't need anything and our real gift is spending time as a family and seeing our precious children happy and healthy. What more could we truly ask for?
Well in a child's eyes they don't see those things as gifts. One day they will understand when they have children of their own.
The other day I was at the grocery store with all three kids picking up a few items for our advent activities. Here was one of our conversations:
Scooter: Mom, how many days it until Christmas?
Me: 5 days Scooter. Aren't you getting excited!
S: Mom it's not 5 days we have like 14 days left.
M: no scooter today is the 20th and Christmas in on the 25th.
S: (counts on his hands and looks at me in complete shock)
I am still thinking this look is a look of shock since it is so much closer to opening gifts but boy was I wrong.
S: But mom I haven't gotten you and daddy anything yet and I only have like four days since we can't go today.
M: Scooter it is really ok, you don't need to get us anything.(then it is quiet and again I think the conversation is over about our gifts)
We walk down the coffee aisle
S: Mom you and dad like that kind of coffee don't you?
M: Yes, Scooter. We don't any today I have plenty at home.
We shop a little more and he asks to go back down the coffee aisle. I tell him no, I got everything and it's time to go check out. He proceeds to beg so I cave and we walk back down the aisle.
Once on the aisle Scooter stops, finds the price of the coffee and counts on his fingers. It finally dawns on me what he was doing. He turns to me and says.... I almost have enough to buy you and dad some coffee for Christmas!
I was trying so hard not to fall apart right there in the coffee aisle of the store. I hug him tightly and promise him that I will arrange a way for him to buy us Christmas gifts.
Today we are meeting Ashlee and Levi at the mall and she agreed to take both boys off to shop for us a gift.
When I told the boys about the plan, both boys were more excited about this than the fact that in 4 short days they would be getting lots of gifts themselves!
I don't care if they buy me a hideous looking shirt that is 4 sizes too big, I will wear it proudly and it will be the BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER!!
